James Perry McCaffrey was an American actor who was best known as the voice of Max Payne, the titular protagonist of the game series of the same name; He voiced the main character in the first two games of the series, Max Payne and Max Payne 2. McCaffrey returned to his role in Max Payne 3, not only for the voiceover but also as the performer of Payne through the use of motion capture. McCaffrey passed away from multiple myeloma at his home in Larchmont, New York, on December 17, 2023, at the age of 65.
McCaffrey had a cameo role in the notorious Max Payne film as the FBI special agent Jack Taliente, who Jim Bravura (Ludacris) refers to as a "real police officer".

James McCaffrey began his acting career in the theater and graduated to television as it progressed. He portrayed Michael Payton/Joe Astor in the 90's action series Viper and had a recurring role on the dramatic series Rescue Me as Jimmy Keefe. He also played supporting roles in several other series (Blue Bloods, Revenge, Bull) over the years.
He also voiced the character Thomas Zane in the Remedy game Alan Wake. He was cast as Zachariah Trench in the another Remedy game Control. His last work was landing his voice to FBI character Alex Casey played by Sam Lake.
