During 2011-2012, Max Payne wears various outfits other than his trademark leather coat. Max wears different outfits and pieces of clothes during his adventures in New Jersey and São Paulo, circa 2011-2012.

Leather Coat[]

Max’s signature distressed leather trench coat, grey suit slacks, and brown loafers, with a leopard print tie. Max’s old faithful jacket, which is decently warm enough to withstand the East Coast winter as well as the bloody remains of the DeMarcos across the Jersey side of the Hudson River. It has seen a lot of action over the years and is too reliable to fail.

Available in Anyone Can Buy Me a Drink and Ain't No Reprievement Gonna Be Found Otherwise. Listed as Hoboken Max in arcade mode.

It is Max’s old outfit from Max Payne 2, but without his NYPD badge.

Dark Green Shirt[]

A dark green collared shirt with a white tank top undershirt, tan slacks, and brown loafers with brown gun holsters. Max's preferred party outfit aboard Daphne Bernstein's yacht while bodyguarding Marcelo Branco, perfect for the hot Panamanian weather he has to endure against the Panamanian pirates.

Available in Sun Tan Oil, Stale Margaritas and Greed. Listed as Panama Max in Arcade Mode.

White Casual Shirt[]

A rolled up white dress shirt with grey slacks and no shoes, worn by Max during his first time in his new home in São Paulo. He needs to feel comfortable somehow if he is going to enjoy his new life in South America, even if he himself makes it difficult.

Seen in the Introduction scene. Listed as Business Casual Max in arcade mode.

Casual Grey Suit[]

A grey suit with a jacket, a white dress shirt without a tie, grey slacks, and brown loafers. Max wears this during his bodyguarding jobs as he needs to look the part, even if he is slightly unhygienic due to mental and physical abuse. This suit later gets ruined in an explosion at Fabricas Branco, with the suit being covered in burns and soot, and ripped up with blood stains from both the explosion and the old sniper rifle bullet wound to the arm.

Available in Something Rotten in the Air, Nothing But The Second Best and A Dame, A Dork, and A Drunk. In arcade mode, Bodyguard Max is the outfit from the first two levels, Rough Night Max is similar, but has Max with messier hair and thicker beard. Bad Day Max is the ruined suit (multiplayer only). Suit and tie Max is the outfit worn in the cutscene before "A Fat Bald Dude with A Temper.

Light Green Shirt[]

A light green collared shirt and a white tank top underneath, with tanned slacks and brown loafers. A bit bright and out of style for the kind of situation that went on inside the Galatians Stadium, but he figured that he should look a bit more respectable towards the Commando Sombra, despite there being hostilities. The left shoulder of the shirt gets ripped and soaked in blood due to a sniper bullet penetrating Max's arm, courtesy of a Crachá Preto sniper.

Available in Just Another Day at the Office. Listed as Smart Casual Max in Arcade Mode. (In multiplayer this Max does not have a wounded arm)

Blue Bulletproof Vest[]

A dark blue t-shirt with black work pants and tactical boots, with a tactical bulletproof vest, as well as a bandaged arm that kept the blood of the bullet wound within the body. Max was going through the jungle and into Commando Sombra territory alone up the Tietê River to rescue a girl he failed to protect, so he needed some extra protection and the cover of darkness to keep himself safe and prepared. The outfit gets dirty and the bandage later gets unraveled and soaked in blood again after a tanker explosion.

Available in Alive If Not Exactly Well. Listed as Docks Max in Arcade Mode.

Hawaiian Shirt[]

A black parrot print Hawaiian shirt with red-orange, blue, green, yellow, and teal designs on the shirt featuring a parrot and tropical plants, beige cargo pants, and brown work boots, as well as some initial accessories of aviator sunglasses and a silver watch. Max needed to look the part of a tourist while inside the Nova Esperança favela as he was entering enemy territory, where as he had put it, "dumb Americans were more unpopular than the Clap." The sunglasses and the watch were stolen by gangsters and the shirt later gets torn up by sliding down a rooftop combined with the collapse of a metal canopy that Max fell onto.

Available in A Hangover Sent Direct from Mother Nature  and Here I Was Again, Halfway Down the World. Listed as Tropical Max in Arcade Mode. (One of the pre-release screenshots has this shirt in red). The Hawaiian shirt is available for order on Rockstar's official shop.

2013 Update: The shirts are no longer available on the Rockstar shop, but exact copies from the real company are easy to come by on Amazon, without the Rockstar logo embellishments, and for cheaper than originally sold by Rockstar.

White Tank-Top[]

A white tank top, typically worn with beige cargo pants and brown work boots. Originally, this tank top was used as a substitute to an undershirt, understandable due to the hot Brazilian weather, as well as serving as homewear for Max during his "R & R" sessions full of vices. Max discarded his Hawaiian shirt as it became too dirty and ripped up to continue wearing, allowing him to show his trusty tank top that exposed him further to the heat of the city as well as the heat that was being brought down on him by the Crachá Preto.

Available in It's Drive or Shoot, Sister and The Great American Savior of the Poor. Listed as Down to Business Max in Arcade mode. This is Max’s tropical outfit without the Hawaiian shirt as he removed it in the beginning of the former chapter.

White Shirt[]

A white dress shirt with black suit slacks and black loafers, with a black tie. Max may have figured that if he were to die during the last part of his journey, he may as well look more formal in doing so and put this together. It initially came with a black suit coat, but Max later removed the black coat, as well as the tie during his assault on the airport, rolling up his sleeves and unbuttoning his collar. The collar gets bloodied thanks to a couple of U.F.E. guards giving Max the bad cop-bad cop routine by pistol whipping him across the head. It later gets ripped up and bloodied when he narrowly avoids being caught in a train crash and further ruined when he narrowly survives an explosion from a grenade launcher round, with the shirt ripped open to reveal his dirty tank top.

Available in A Fat Bald Dude with a Bad Temper and in One Card Left to Play.

Police Max is the outfit with the tie. Worst Day Max is the torn, bloodied shirt. In multiplayer, Police Max has a larger tie and a strap across his shirt. This outfit is visible in the loading screen graphic novels for "A Fat Bald Dude With A Temper"

White Shirt with Bulletproof Vest[]

The white shirt suit with an U.F.E. flak jacket vest. Max thought that although it was a little late for precautions, he figured that "this shitshow was barely through the warm-up act," deciding that it would be best if he wore extra protection for the final search through the U.F.E. headquarters. He later discards it once he confronts Becker.

Available in A Fat Bald Dude with a Bad Temper. Listed as Borrowed Vest Max in Arcade Mode. If the Flak Vest was found and inspected, he wears this for the rest of the chapter. Otherwise, he will remain with his white dress shirt without the vest. Strangely, in the final cutscene, the vest simply disappears and he is seen wearing his default white shirt.

Blue Shirt with Cap[]

A blue plaid buttoned shirt with beige cargo shorts and flip flops, with a blue Strikers baseball cap and sunglasses as accessories. With Max no longer being part of any conflict and is now free to enjoy the rest of his South American vacation, Max couldn't turn to a even more perfect vacation outfit than this, clean and fitting to his ending compared to the dirty beginning he experienced.

Seen in last chapter,One Card Left to Play. Listed as Beach Max in Arcade Mode.

Trivia[]

  • A few of Max’s outfits can be recreated in Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online.
    • In Grand Theft Auto V, protagonist Michael De Santa wears a brown distressed leather jacket that looks only slightly similar to Max's leather jacket but it does not have a white dress shirt with tie, instead having a dark collared shirt underneath, and can wear gray suit slacks and brown loafers underneath. In Grand Theft Auto Online, similar leather jackets can be found, with the suit slacks and loafers also being possible to find and equip, but the jackets either do not look exactly the same or it cannot be opened. There can be a few ties that look similar to Max's leopard print tie, but not the same.
    • In Grand Theft Auto V, Michael can purchase and wear Max’s Parrot Print Hawaiian shirt. However, the shirt is open and it shows a white t-shirt underneath rather than a white tank top, and there are no beige cargo pants to match the pants, but there are brown wingtips for purchase that resemble Max’s work boots. Players can use the shirt, beige slacks, and brown wingtips for the outfit, and optional sunglasses for detail. The Parrot Print Hawaiian shirt design, although not appearing as a shirt in Grand Theft Auto Online, appears on a pair of boxers for purchase. To resemble Max’s tank top outfit, Michael simply needs to remove the shirt and replace it with a tank top.
      • For Grand Theft Auto Online, male players cannot find the Parrot Print shirt anywhere while only the female players can buy it, but for a close replica, players can find a party shirt of their choosing, with beige cargo pants, and brown wingtips, with sunglasses and a watch for optional accessories. For Max’s white tank top outfit, players simply need to swap out the party shirt with a white tank top.
      • Strangely enough, the design print is used on a pair of boxers for male protagonists.
    • Max’s gray suit can be recreated with protagonist Michael De Santa by just using one of his premade gray suit outfits. In Grand Theft Auto Online, the suit can be remade by using a gray suit jacket, a white dress shirt, light gray slacks, and brown loafers.
    • Max’s white dress shirt outfit can be recreated in Grand Theft Auto Online by simply purchasing the white dress shirt, black suit slacks, black skinny tie, and loafers. Players can choose whether to add the black suit jacket or medium black bulletproof vest if they wish to do so.
    • Max’s blue bulletproof outfit can be slightly recreated with some minor changes in Grand Theft Auto Online. For maximum effect, it is advised to purchase the blue Broker V-shape T-shirt (due to it having a closer blue resemblance), a bulletproof vest from AmmuNation, black team pants, and black flight boots.
    • For Max’s beach outfit, in Grand Theft Auto Online, players need to purchase a blue plaid shirt, beige cargo shorts, flip flops, a blue hat, and a pair of aviator sunglasses. The blue Strikers hat is not available, so players would have to find and use whatever blue hat that suits them.
  • Max’s Hoboken, Hawaiian Shirt, White Tank Top, White Dress Shirt, and Casual Grey Suit outfits are the only outfits that are canonically worn in more than one chapter.
    • The Casual Gray Suit outfit is worn in “Something Rotten in The Air,” “Nothing But The Second Best,” and being ripped up and discarded in “A Dame, A Dork, And A Drunk.”
    • The Hoboken outfit is worn in “Anyone Can Buy Me a Drink” and “Ain’t No Reprievement Gonna Be Found Otherwise," later most likely put away due to the inconvenience of wearing a leather jacket in hot southern weather.
    • The Hawaiian Shirt outfit is worn in “A Hangover Sent Direct From Mother Nature” and “Here I Was Again, Halfway Down The World," with the shirt being discarded in the beginning cutscene of "It's Drive Or Shoot, Sister." It is featured on numerous official artwork designs.
    • The White Tank Top outfit is worn in the ending cutscenes of "Something Rotten in The Air," "Nothing But The Second Best," & "Alive If Not Exactly Well." It is fully worn in “It’s Drive Or Shoot, Sister” and “The Great American Saviour of The Poor.” It was later placed underneath the White Dress Shirt outfit in "A Fat Bald Dude With a Bad Temper" and "One Card Left to Play."
    • The White Dress Shirt outfit is worn in “A Fat Bald Dude With a Bad Temper” and “One Card Left to Play.”
  • If one notices, Max has the same tan slacks and brown loafers for his Light Green Shirt and Green Shirt outfits.
  • The White Tank Top is featured underneath on almost every outfit that Max wears in the game, except for his Hoboken outfit (possibly).
  • Although Max can wear bulletproof vests in "Alive If Not Exactly Well" and "A Fat Bald Dude With a Bad Temper," they do not provide extra ballistic protection and Max takes the same amount of damage. They are most likely for plot and cosmetic purposes rather than for gameplay element.
  • If one notices on the Blue Bulletproof Vest outfit, there is a clean bandage on Max's arm to help with pressurizing his sniper bullet wound from the Galatians stadium, initially only slightly covered in blood, but throughout the chapter, due to his consistent moving around as well as the tanker explosion in the climax of the chapter, it becomes more bloodied and later becomes unraveled and further soaked in blood, showing that Max's bullet wound opened up.
  • In "A Dame, A Dork, And a Drunk," after the explosion, Max's suit can be seen bleeding from the left arm where his bullet wound was, showing that the wound had opened up again and is bleeding.
  • Throughout Max's outfits, his wounds from previous chapters can be seen initially fresh, but later somewhat healed overtime, such as his scars from "A Dame, A Dork, And a Drunk" healing by the events of "One Card Left to Play."
  • Max's hair gets more disheveled and his beard gets more thicker as each level passes:
    • In the Hoboken chapters, "Anyone Can Buy Me A Drink" and "Ain't No Reprievement Gonna Be Found Otherwise," as well as the Panamanian chapter, "Sun Tan Oil, Stale Margaritas, and Greed," Max is initially clean shaven. His hair is also styled to look slightly more cleaner. These looks show the initial stage of his rapidly decreasing hygiene.
    • In "Something Rotten In The Air," Max's hair is slightly less parted and his beard develops a five o-clock shadow. In "Nothing But The Second Best," his hair is slightly less parted than before, and his five o-clock shadow is more apparent.
    • In "Just Another Day At The Office," his beard is more showing to be a thick stubble. It is much more apparent in "Alive If Not Exactly Well."
    • In "A Dame, A Dork, And A Drunk," his hair is much more disheveled to the point where it is completely messy, and his beard is much more thicker and less groomed.
    • In "A Hangover Sent Direct From Mother Nature" and beyond, his head was shaven bald and his beard is much more thicker, growing out of a stubble.
    • Around "A Fat Bald Dude With a Bad Temper" to the ending of the game, his head is starting to show dark shades of small hair follicles growing back on his skin, showing a rapid pace of hair re-growth. His beard is also slightly more thicker and bushier.
  • Almost all of Max's outfits get ruined somehow, except for the Leather Jacket, Dark Green Shirt, and Blue Plaid Shirt outfits.
