- "It's supposed to be a charity thing, drink and give money. I don't know, something for the kids."
- ―Raul Passos.
The kidnapping attempt was ultimately failed due to the involvement of Max Payne, a former NYPD detective who served as Rodrigo's bodyguard during the time of the incident.
Rodrigo Branco was a rich businessman living in Sao Paulo with his wife, Fabiana. Fabiana herself was most of the time a kidnapping attempt. The Comando Sombra, a known gang that specialized in kidnaps, targeted Fabiana, planning two or more kidnapping attempts if the first one will failed.
Start of a shootoutEdit
On the day of the kidnapping, the Branco family held a charity party at their residence, inviting known people such as Armando Becker and Arthur Fischer, as well letting to two of their bodyguards, Max Payne and Raul Passos, to enjoy the party. At the party Raul told Max on some of the guests, giving him a drink, and finally going to meet his lover Giovanna Taveres. At the party, most of the guests spoke with each other quitely, while Fabiana and Rodrigo's younger brother Marcelo, danced. Victor Branco, the middle son of the Branco, came to the party at the same time.
Suddenly, a group of armed Comando Sombra troopers came from an elevator, killing a bodyguard and shooting at guests. The troopers grabbed Fabiana and Rodrigo and took them away. Max tried to stop them but was forced to drop his gun and when they left he quickly picks it up and chases after them.
- "I said I would protect the girl."
- ―Max Payne.
Max and Raul attempted to stop the Comando Sombra from entering an elevator, but failed. The two parted ways on the stairs in order to cover more space. Raul went downstairs while Max went upstairs. Max entered a balcony, finding a few Comando Sombra men killing a few people. Max was able to kill them.
Payne heard Fabiana's screams, and jumped off the balcony to a pool, killing the man who held her in the process. Raul, Becker, Marcelo and two bodyguards arrived to the scene. Raul came to help Max out the pool, whilst Becker and Marcelo calmed Fabiana down.
- "Max, help!"
- ―Rodrigo Branco as he is forced into a van.
With Fabiana saved and alive, Max switches guns with Passos and goes off to save Rodrigo from being taken. Max followed the Comando Sombra to the Branco residence's parking lot, killing in the process every Comando Sombra member he encountered. After seeing a captivated Rodrigo held by Comando Sombra and was forced into a black van, Max rushed to the van, popping one of its wheels.
The Comando Sombra members in the van came out, but were all killed by Max. Max tried to release Rodrigo from the van, who at a moment of panic, knocked Max to the ground. Two Comando Sombra members ran to finish their comrades' job, but one was killed while the other was injured. Max calmed down Rodrigo and took his boss away from the van, to his family.
"No taking prisoners"Edit
Moments later, Armando Becker, his right-hand man and a group of UFE soldiers arrived in an armored van, attempting to kill every surviving Comando Sombra trooper. Before the unit was able to finish off every CS, Wilson Da Silva stopped them in order to learn more on the kidnapping.
Rodrigo was soon joined by his family who tried to calm him down. Max went back to his apartment, having some drinks. He later vomited at his sink before going to sleep.
A few days later, Max and Raul brought Fabiana, Marcelo and Giovanna to Club Moderno, where the three often hanged out. During the party, the Comando Sombra attacked and took Fabiana, successfully kidnapping her.
