The Beginning of the game. Max Payne wakes up in a hospital with two unexplained bullet wounds to his chest, with many cases of hallucinations. Find your bearings.

The game throws the player already half-damaged, waking up on the hospital bed with no reason as to why, but you get more information via hallucination and internal monologue.
WalkthroughEdit
Open the nearby cupboard for two painkillers. Get out of the room, and enter the door to your right once you're in the corridor. Max will ask if anyone's there, but the only answer he gets are some weird voices coming from inside of his own head. In this room, run towards the white door at the end, and Max will hallucinate even more. He sees Mona in a red jacket. Exit through the white door. Now, enter the door to the right of the 'ICU' sign, and answer the phone that's ringing. Payne hallucinates, and hears Nicole Horne saying 'Is this the Payne residence?'. You'll now hear a doctor talking, informing you of a detective coming in DOA. Exit this room, and go a little left for three painkillers hidden inside a red medical box at the floor. Proceed into the surgery room using the white double doors nearby.
In here, you will see a corpse lying on the floor. You'll pick up a 9mm Pistol from the floor, and a commando will enter the room lookin for you. Take him down (he does not move from the doorway and dies easily) and exit the room using the door the commando came from. A cut-scene where Max sees Mona and Winterson will start. Exit the room, and watch the drawings on the windows in front of you, where the prologue of the first game is explained: Max is a policeman, he has a family, the family is killed, and Max starts to cry. Now run to the right, ignore the reception, and watch an episode of Address Unknown. After this episode, various commercials will air at random.. When you're done watching TV, get into the elevator that has opened.

Down here, Jim Bravura will encounter you. He thinks you're guilty, and that you have murdered your partner Winterson. Things suddenly speed up, and Bravura is shot down by a commando, with his last words: "Bullshit". The elevator you're in falls down after wayward bullets light a flammable tank and explodes in the elevator shaft, and you lose your guns as well as any painkillers in your possession. Down here, after a short walk into the morgue you'll see Winterson's dead body (the aforementioned DOA detective), and a graphical novel showing police officers and Mona will start. The level ends here.
